Tailgater

leave a comment »

Good chicken fajitas before the UH-Tulsa game at a tailgate party with Nat, other UH cheerleaders, and their guests. Tastes really good, and with me not having eaten anything else today and them having cooked up far more than we could finish off, I’d go back for a second round. But I need to keep reminding myself that anything that goes in tonight comes right back out tomorrow in preparation for Monday’s med procedures. Tailgater today, tailhater tomorrow, one might say.

Curried Favorite

This curried corn chowder savored at a texmex restaurant we went to on Jenny‘s recommendation was one of the tastiest I’ve had. And I’d have it again at a moment’s notice, even if it was what wound me up so tight inside that I ate almost nothing for half a week after, versus the chicken quesadilla or corn chips that accompanied it for lunch, the cheese omelette or fried potatoes or bacon or english muffin that preceded it for breakfast, the tub of popcorn and heavy pretzel I had at the UH game later in the evening, or the buffalo chicken strips that finished the day off.

Corner Bakery Munchies

leave a comment »

Luckily we happened to find out that we’d be dining tonight at Buca’s, else we might have gone for a bigger lunch, especially after being delayed several hours sharing common experiences with a couple from Houston considering having their daughter join Jen‘s group. On Jen’s advice, then, we lunched at the Corner Bakery Cafe.

Their roasted tomato basil soup was average, nothing special but ok. But I wound up just picking at their chopped salad – oven-roasted chicken, crisp applewood smoked bacon, avocado, bleu cheese, tomatoes, and green onions tossed with iceberg and romaine lettuce in their sweet and spicy house vinaigrette. All in all, I should have gone with Jen’s recommendation and had their Pesto Cavatappi, even with Buca’s looming on the horizon.

Bay Area Chipolte

leave a comment »

Now that Chipotle has one of its establishments down on Bay Area Boulevard and now that Nat’s done at San Jac, we may never make it over to the Pasadena Chipotle ever again, unless we’re over there for a dental appointment or doing something with the cell phones.

But yes, I’ll take Chipotle over the Freebirds down the street, any day. Freebirds has nothing I would fancy as alternative to Chipotle’s barbacoa.

I do wonder, what compels a burrito joint to decide to co-sponsor a team in the Tour de France? But I won’t bother giving Chipotle’s website’s own link to its idea of what its bicycling sponsorship means, since I’d advise against visiting Chipotle’s website more strongly than how much I do recommend their food. Website designers who forget to provide an alternative to poorly designed flash should be forced to use first-generation browsers for all of their own web surfing (although if they knew why I curse them that penalty, they wouldn’t junk up Chipotle’s good name like they’re doing to begin with, so alas the lesson would no doubt be lost on them).

As Hot As It Gets

as hot as it gets
With Kelly for lunch over to Buffalo Wild Wings (with no apologies, I don’t bother linking to poorly designed websites that insist on locking up your browser). Although I never used to have a ceiling on my heat appetite in my youth, these days I would tend to go for the medium. Today I decided to shoot for BWW’s second from the top: their mango habenero. Still nice to touch that kind of heat once in a while. Here done with a beer, my bit of brew for the month.

post-buca

To celebrate Nat‘s success making it on the UH cheerleading squad, we treated ourselves to another sumptuous dinner at Buca di Beppo. After garlic bread with cheese, Nat and B split a pepperoni pizza, Susan did an individual serving of stuffed manicotti, and I indulged in a serving of fetuchinni alfredo that was way more than I could eat because I expected more help from the others than I got. But we do go to Buca as much for the dessert as for anything, so Nat and B split the huge chocolate treat while I helped Susan out a little with some cheesecake.

Outside, we saw one young woman carrying a gift-wrapped present and leading a blindfolded friend toward Buca. Next time there’s reason to celebrate, we’ll have to remember to do that for Nat.

Pleasing Cheesy Chicken

leave a comment »

cheesy chicken enchilada soup
Lunch today was at Rachel’s Cottage Tea Room, always a relaxing delight well worth the drive down to League City. Mango tea for me, plain tea for Susan.

A cup of cheesy chicken enchilada soup for me, and I was only sorry I didn’t indulge in a full bowl. I did walk out with a take-out order of the soup which I was to have for lunch come Monday, then was only sorry I hadn’t asked for two or three take-out orders. Very nicely spiced!

Susan had tomato basil soup. Which she chased down with their “Bachelor’s Button” sandwich (pistrami and cheese on a croissant) while I had a tuna (chicken?) salad sandwich on whole wheat, both orders accompanied by a delightful fruit salad and veggie chips.

Family-Made Feast

leave a comment »

family-made feast
Jenny was just starting her work shift as we headed south today, so we stopped for lunch at the Subway where she works. I was planning to shoot for a double-meat 12″ BMT until Susan reminded me that as late as we were lunching, that would kill my appetite for a second pass at RH&B. So I settled for 6″ of Subway’s newest sandwich, currently their featured item: the “Feast“: spicy Pepperoni, Genoa Salami, Black Forest Ham, tender Roast Beef, Turkey and American Cheese.

(Side Note: Learned the tip that little portions of vinegar placed out on the sandwich bar keeps flies away.)

RH&B Double Trouble

leave a comment »

rh&b double trouble

Can’t do much better: right next door to our Plano TX hotel was a Red Hot & Blue!

The first pulled pork sandwich I ever had was served up Memphis style at RH&B’s Frederick MD location. It’s been one of my favorite sandwiches ever since, although I’ve not since had one as good as RH&B’s. That, and I picked up a RH&B CD to keep their selection of blues music close to my ears.

Here Susan and I share half a basket of onion rings for an appetizer and peach cobbler with ice cream for dessert. For dinner, she has a huge baked potato topped with pulled pork, while I pig out on pulled pork, sausage, corn on the cob, and hushpuppies.

Our version of RH&B double trouble: We’ll be back here tomorrow night for a pulled pork sandwich each.

Taste of Desire

turtle soup

This will be our final night in New Orleans. So although my stomach still feels like it is walking a tightrope balcony to balcony over Bourbon Street, I would not forgive myself for leaving town without at least trying to keep some of the cooking here down long enough to make my blood hum.

But I’m still not feeling quite up to a lot of exploring, so we settle once again for the Royal Sonesta’s oyster bar, Desire, at the corner of Bourbon and Bienville. Turtle soup to begin my dinner, please, and this time I made it all the way through to the last succulent spoonful!!

jambalaya

Then although I knew I was not up to making it even halfway through this, I went for the taste of some jambalaya, this one with chicken, shrimp and sausage, quite heavily spiced. And I should have had them box up what I didn’t finish so I could have smelled up the car on the ride home the next day!

Desire might be just streetside bistro fare, probably midway at best on the scale of fine New Orleans dining. But I’d be back there once or twice a week if they were anywhere within range of my nose and taste buds.

Desire’s Pork

desire's pork
Pulled pork sandwich from the Royal Sonesta’s oyster bar, Desire.  I can vouch for the turtle soup here, although even that is probably average at best.  But I’ve had many a pulled pork sandwich that would rank above this one.  Ditto the potato salad: although Susan thought it ok, I found it not too many steps above just eating some unseasoned cooked potatoes.

Maybe it’s just still too early for me to be attempting to eat any serious solid food.

Late Lunch at La Mad’s

late lunch at la mad's soup at la mad's

Susan and Nat checked out World Market, a newcomer to Baybrook’s shopping complex, while I camped out at the nearby Barnes & Noble, after we had shared lunch at La Madelaine’s, surprisingly quite crowded at mid-afternoon on this mid-April Saturday. For me, a tuna salad sandwich, pesto pasta, and a cup of the best tomato basil soup in the world.

Shula’s As Perfect As Ever

leave a comment »

After three hours of a quickly escalating war to get the government travel agency to give me my seat back on tomorrow’s flight, dinner with Susan at Shula’s was as much a reward and medicine for my bp as it was the luxurious treat we originally planned it to be. Frazzled as I was, however, I forget to bring my trusty digital camera along, and was just plain too damn tired to head upstairs to retrieve it from our room.

So our dinner will have to go remembered as the simple pleasure Shula’s has always been. My usual bowl of lobster bisque while Susan enjoyed their iceberg lettuce, filet mignon for each of us, with that fantastic creamed spinach and some caramelized onions on the side, along with a glass of white zin each.

And I’m pleased to see that Shula’s will finally be venturing into Houston this spring. I’ll have to find something to celebrate as soon as they open.

Texas Roadhousers

leave a comment »

as roadhousers

Susan, Kelly and I joined Brandon and Nat tonight for dinner at Texas Roadhouse. Pulled pork dinner for me, with TR’s very delicious chili and a salad as my sides dishes. Did about 2/3 of a tall beer. Only one of their great rolls, but enough peanuts to keep an elephant happy.

Great dinner conversation. It’s been too many decades, I guess, since I sat for my actuarial exams, so I still thought the first one covered calculus. Since Kelly’s taking a calc course this semester, I encouraged him to consider adding an actuarial exam to his resume. Somehow, the dinner conversation never strayed too very far from mathematics the rest of the dinner, with Susan and Brandon left somewhat to fend for themselves.

Bisque Bliss

leave a comment »

bisque blissThey changed their menu since the last time we dined at PapaGayo’s, and at first I was grumping about them dropping their crawfish bisque, the main reason I like when we eat here. But here it is! – although their online menu still lists the bisque with their soups, their dining menu lists it among their seafood entrees.

I’d worked so late on my speadsheet before we made it out for dinner, that Papagayo’s had all their doors locked for closing before we were done, so we had to exit via a fire door. I wouldn’t have thought that compliant with safety code rules. Eh, as long as they don’t have a fire like the one that took out some of the businesses across the street, I probably don’t care enough, just don’t drop my bisque from the menu.

An Exciting Opportunity?

leave a comment »

dan dan noodles an exciting opportunity

Pei Wei is a bit more crowded than we would normally expect for the middle of a Sunday afternoon. I take to wondering if any of them are like I might sometimes get, turning their clocks back an hour this morning instead of ahead an hour, so they think they’re here early for lunch, only later today to accidentally discover that they would now have lost two hours instead of daylight saving’s singleton. Then as if I’ve cast that curse on myself, I’ll wind up spending the rest of this day feeling even further behind than even a 2-hour loss would have put me. Eh, so much for that exciting opportunity – it probably lay an hour or two the other side of standard time from where I’m loitering.
