When I want to edit some writing, whether my own or something like one of Nat‘s papers, I should take the time to read it out loud. I don’t catch everything if I just edit it silently in my head.

Jenniversary

leave a comment »

Nat gave up a TV appearance cheering at UH’s game this weekend to join us visiting Jen this weekend to join her celebrating a special anniversary.

You’ve had such a good year this past year, Jen. We’re all very proud of your good work.

Group dinner after the meeting was at Buca di Beppo, where Susan and I shared a small cheese manicotti.

P is for Portability

A current employee . . . [is] eligible for special enrollment . . . if— (A) The employee . . . [is] otherwise eligible to enroll . . . [and] (B) When coverage under the plan was previously offered, the employee had coverage under any group health plan or health insurance coverage . . . .”

45 C.F.R. § 146.117(a)(2)

Common sense conditions apply, but the gist of that is that if you declined health insurance coverage with your current employer because you were already covered under some other health insurance, and then you subsequently lose that other coverage, your employer’s health insurance plan is required to provide you a special enrollment period.

Some rude health insurance company employee wants Kelly to believe that it’s “against state law” for them to allow him to come into his company’s plan now, upon losing coverage under his dad’s company’s health plan. Against state law? Since when did state law trump HIPAA? Not!

Kelly’s situation is one of the simplest illustrations of what the P in HIPAA stands for. A health insurer’s employee should not be acting as a representative for the insurer without knowing that very basic rule.

Late Returns

leave a comment »

As much as I prefer the WordPress style I switched to several weeks ago versus what I had been using earlier, one huge drawback is this style’s lack of a timestamp to accompany the datestamp. So I’ll have to point out on my own that this snapshot is taken at 2:33am. Kelly and Nat were supposed to be back in town from their trip by around 9 or 10pm last night; but their flight was delayed on an earlier leg, and they were unable to board an alternative flight on standby.

Happens to every airline. Difference with others is that on the likes of American, even your pilot cracks jokes about delays being standard operating procedure, like you were the fool to expect their schedule to mean anything. Southwest never ceases delivering top-quality customer service, not even when unforeseen circumstances interfere.

Still, I would have preferred it to have been me rather than the kids.

Southwest from the Nest

leave a comment »

We have an empty nest for the weekend. Kelly and Nat are flying out of Hobby up to Kansasa City, from there to drive up to Des Moines, to attend their uncle’s wedding. Jenny will be joining them, flying up from Dallas tomorrow.

All flying Southwest, of course. Why anyone would fly American or any of the other loser airlines who are working so hard these days to drive customers away, I can’t figure out. Even if Southwest doesn’t have a route to where you’re going, you’re still better off flying to the nearest airport they do fly to, then renting a car and driving the rest of the way. Seriously.

bitty burb's back
Nat’s back from her trip to San Antonio to visit with Jen. She’d used the Bitty Burb while her ‘Stang was visiting with the mechanic.

Seeing Jen Off Again

leave a comment »

where's jen?

Jen’s brief spring break is over already. (At least she got to stick around until today, thanks to Jen’s own responsible behavior, versus that last-minute come-back-a-day-early surprise her irresponsible supervisor tried to pull on her.)

I saw little of her myself these past few days. First she was off to Galveston for a day with her dad. Most of the rest of the time, either I was off at the office or she was out shopping. Even so, it was good to see her again.
