Back to Backwashing

with 2 comments

Susan and Nat are cleaning the house like hasn’t been done in ages, so I figure I’ll make myself useful.

Is this the first time I’ve backwashed the pool completely on my own (except for when Susan came out to check the chlorine tablet level, which I would have checked on anyway)? Either I need to write down the instructions (like, how much powder to add at the end, and how to put the pump back in the service mode), which I too easily forget, or else I need to do this myself more often so maybe it sinks in. Susan’s been doing too much of the pool maintenance far too long, I’m ashamed to admit.

Through the remainder of the week, we need to shock the pool, then backwash it again. Which Susan will definitely have to do, or at least supervise, since I’m clueless how to shock a pool. See?

Ike Recovery Multitasking

leave a comment »

This past Monday, trash collection took normal trash, but left the pile of tree debris we had stacked out at the curb. Houston says its trash service will pick up storm debris; but our neighborhood contracts out with Waste Management, and of course there’s no readily available information to be had on what their policy will be or when it might be carried out. Our lawn service doesn’t chop debris, but did agree to haul it off next week. Even so, it’s relaxing to chop it all up myself, whereupon Susan will bag it, whereupon our trash collection will take it as if it were normal trash. (And after I took the lion’s share out by the pool for chopping, as pictured here, today’s trash collection did take the small orderly stack of debris that remained at the curb; so after this pile has been chopped and bagged, we will be done.)

But as lazy as this Ike recovery effort probably appears compared to what most Ike victims face, at least I’m multitasking. That’s not my Zen mp3 player piped into my ears; it’s my cell phone. I’m on a conference call, discussing government regulations that will extend relief for companies adversely affected by Hurricane Ike.

Watching Steam Clean

leave a comment »

Blue watches me push the steam cleaner over the foyer rug. He should run warn his furry friends that this is not one of my steamclean relaxation moments. That I will lie in wait to find out who has been making this their private toilet. And intend to exact justice. A certain little chihuahua and his person should take heed.

Cleaning the Zoo

cleaning the zooListening to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida on its 40th birthday while steam cleaning the foyer carpet the hard way (my noodlenoggin iron butterflied head not having noticed that the cleaning fluid reservoir has drained dry). With three dogs and two cats, steam cleaning the “zoo” is a constant task. Little do I know, the zoo is about to gain a newcomer.

Memo To Self

memo to self

I need to help remember to bring along the reusable grocery bags. Does us no good when they’re sitting back at the house.

New soda for me: Big Peach, made by Big Red. Also picked up a tapioca pudding snack pack.

Susan gave me approval to purchase anything Krogers had in the far back corner of the store until she saw they had a Harley sitting there. Later amendment to her approval: if I could swing the Harley within no more than the amount tab for our basket of groceries – about $115 for this trip – then I am allowed to purchase two. So if McCain’t wins in November and continues the W Administration’s policies, by next year maybe a grocery cartful will be more expensive than a hog, and I’ll be on two wheels!

Clean Trunk

leave a comment »

void

A little more than nine months after loading the Blue Bug up to move from my old office, I can finally see the vehicle’s trunk floor.

Didn’t manage to find the missing flash drive, nor the travel power converter Kelly gave me for Christmas. But did find seven — yes, seven! — new toothbrushes that had been given to me by my dentist over several years worth of visits.

And not only is the righthand view temporary, quickly occupied by a small box of sorted junk; but other sort piles moved to the Blue Bug front seat (a few things I can use at the office), the Blue Bug back seat (books), my side of the bed (just a few books I want to peek through this afternoon, a CD I need to sync to the Zen, and a few papers to file, all to be cleared from deck today), and my nightstand (chronic exposure to clutter). Even so, half a large garbage bag (including two quite wayward ancient photographs that Susan declined to rescue) made its way from the car trunk out to the street for trash pickup tomorrow morning.

Chore Breaks

chore breaks
Susan and Nat are cleaning house today. Nat even dusted the ceiling fan blades, which had managed to accumulate piles of dust despite continuously turning!

I’m working from the house today; but during breaks while my computer chugs through its attempts to keep pace with me, I putter around helping out some with the chores: clean the bathroom mirrors; tidy and clean my sink; clean the master toilet; vacuum the master bathroom and master bedroom; and scrub the shower floor.

Spring Cleaning

spring cleaning
OK, this isn’t really spring cleaning per se, not in the proverbial sense, but at least I’ll be getting a little bit done around the house, and it is the first weekend of this spring.

Will be following up with the steam cleaner, easily my favorite chore, during which I’ll switch over to listening to tunes on the Zen Vision:M versus the cell phone music I’m tuned into here.

Kitty follows closely behind to inspect . . . and to get a head start on re-depositing my withdrawals.

Some Help!

some help!
some help!!

Dylan gets too curious about the camera, set on its timer for a snapshot of our Saturday afternoon pool chore duties from the perspective of the shallow end. So I have to chase him off and set up a second shot to catch me vacuuming up the pool floor while Susan finishes up putting DE powder in the deep-end skimmer after we had backwashed.

Susan called equipment people to have them check out some leaks in some of the pool pump seals. They should drop by in a week or two or whenever they get around to it — apparently it must be a busy time of year for pool equipment people?!

Thumbs Up for New Steamer

with one comment

thumbs up for new steam cleanerI did several rounds of steam cleaning today, main focus being on the master bedroom.I like this new steam cleaner very much, and would heartily recommend it. I’m not sure that the carpets through the most heavily trafficked doorways of the house have been this clean since the first year of the eight this house has existed, despite trying to keep up with my steam clean rituals. Music from my Zen Vision M mp3 player during this stretch was Rob Zombie‘s Living Dead Girl.

If I were not an actuary, I would most definitely not be a handyman. If Ikea cared about having comprehensible instructions – which they notoriously and quite obviously do not – then I could be their crack beta tester for improving their instructions, since I can always find the wrong way to do a handyman task even when one doesn’t exist. Why I ever appear in snapshots such as this is a deep mystery. Perhaps it’s to teach me humility, a personality trait actuaries tend to lack.

But in this tag team method of hanging four pictures in the upstairs bathrooms, I am the one who manages to get the screws into the dense particle board of the frames, then later on to do the hanging. Kelly cuts wire, and Susan wraps the wire securely on the screws. Nat is our project photographer (although this is the only downloaded pic of the set she took that managed to make it to online storage before the death of the Dell).

Spoiling Myself with a New Toy

leave a comment »

first pass with my new royal 7910We had to take our vacuum cleaner into the shop to have it checked out, which turned out to be no big deal.

But as I promised myself after one bad Kroger rental too many, I took the opportunity to look into once again having a steam cleaner of our own. I wanted a Hoover, like the one that died on me last year, but our trusted vacuum cleaner guy recommended the Royal Procision 7910, a little more expensive but with a better warranty
. . . and from what I’m reading after the fact, and from what I’m seeing in the equipment’s first two passes, a superior machine. And we got it at a price even lower than the sale prices I’m seeing on the Internet.

So I’m happily back to my favorite chore. I like to steam clean carpets. If and when I retire from my actuarial work, maybe I can find me some cleaning jobs to keep me occupied.

Grocery Goodies!

leave a comment »

Grocery GoodiesOn our way back to the house from the overtime San Jac basketball game, we stop at Krogers – we won’t rent a steam cleaner there ever again, but it will remain our primary grocery store, at least for now. Main goal: hamburger buns and other needs for tomorrow eveningafternoon‘s grilling, plus Texas Toast for the French toast I’ll be making tomorrow morning.

To that add several treats for me: Krogers macaroni salad; a four-pack of the new Sunkist orange Float; and some Whoppers strawberry milkshake malted milk balls. You can see how excited I am!
