As Expected

leave a comment »

Patterns shown by certain charts demonstrate once again that one need not collect all the stars in the galaxy to get a pretty good idea what the night sky looks like. As expected. In this case, meaning representational. Characteristic. Sufficiently typical. At least one of us will still find solitude in exploring stretches others never get around to visiting, but even the outliers we find won’t rewrite any books.

That doesn’t mean I have a clue where that $70 billion number for an increase is coming from. I still think somebody’s smoking something left over from the 60s. Does it not bother anybody that that’s completely off the current chart? And what became of smoothing, corridors, and expected service? Or are we phasing in phase 2 already? So let’s see now, what them quarterlies are leaking out to us. As expected. In this case, meaning that what some have called expected is not necessarily remotely realistic. Watch for something no higher than $40 billion increase for the galaxy, with maybe $30-35 billion for the constellation – still enough of a leap to give pause to any premature market recovery, since earnings forecasts have not yet factored these numbers in, but no more than half the $70 speculation. At least one of us is not all that surprised, although don’t hold your breath waiting for a corrected number to sneak into the final report.

Milk Day

We’re not going to that parade. We get to recycle. We won’t sit around the emergency room all day. We get to show good will.

And do whatever we want.

Celebrate the final day of a failed government. Lament yesterday’s extinction of two bird species. Clean Gertie’s cage. Commemorate Edgar Allen’s 200th. Go out skateboarding.

Catch up on my writing, maybe stretch into another chapter or two. Clean up revisions on the metric. Read at least nine poems. Putter.

Sit outside in the sun. Walk. Sleep off this headache. Rest.

Drink milk. Drink a lot of milk. It’s a good day to drink milk.

License to Skill

Lost this morning’s dream on the force of last night’s closing music, Dylan channeling Marley, filling the corners of the room like Saturday morning’s first light.

I need to make some concrete progress today, make it a day to look back at like when I used to bicycle centuries without complaint. Focus on things I can get done, things I do well. Kickstart this year in a meaningful direction. A predictable direction, one might even say. It can be done, no BS.

Now that I’ve got the steam cleaner unclogged, today would be good for clogging it up again. And for vacuuming the pool, which looks like it’s been collecting enough debris to make birds’ nests for the entire neighborhood. And to clean my nightstand . . . again. And maybe give Gertie a clean cage to start her year out on the same page. All these things I can do, then still have enough time left for making more of the day, if I don’t spend all morning lounging over the Journal (from IE, no less, managing to clear out some of the hairballs accumulating in my e-mail inbox).

I’ll start reorganizing the files on Jeanette. The 20+ gig she still has open is more than adequate, of course; but it’s amazing how quickly I can fill trunks in her attic. Like, still getting used to camera settings, so feeding her a 1.7gig video from the UH bowl win (which I’ll maybe delete anyway, since it failed to capture what I had hoped to record) – no more than a dozen more of those, and Jeanette would be all bloated out. Given how I see Jeanette growing, today might be as good a time as any to open up some more reliable on-line storage than what I’ve been using.

I will write more on the book today. Materially more. Without allowing myself to get distracted too much by background research: I know I still need to find what I was looking for yesterday (I can’t possibly be the only one on the face of the planet who remembers the spark that set Black Monday off), but I can’t let that slow me down on the writing itself.

Your to do list looks like you’re likely to get more done today than I might. Want to trade?

Recharging

leave a comment »

Lining up HAL, elgie, the bluetooth, the zen, my electric shaver and camera batteries for their Sunday morning recharging. Anything I’m forgetting to plug in for its juice? My own head, maybe?

Sync to the zen: NPR Wait Wait podcasts for November 23 and 30, plus the free mp3 song handed out to fans who register with Bob’s website. Camera pic files dumped. Rummaged through my nightstand drawer and computer case, looking for the sync USB cord for my own brain, still can’t find where I put it.

Began puttering around with Google’s new “wiki” tools on its Internet searches.

Cleared more than 150 more messages out of my main e-mail inbox, bringing my backlog down below 500. Am clearing through more of the old pic files, sending some over to online albums, cutting another CD for the offline attic. Reorganizing the work bags carrying current traffic. Once again tidying my nightstand and bathroom sink areas. Might comb my hair.

Book Knowledge

To the minute. Of when my alarm would have awakened me. If this were a work day.

Which maybe it should be. Since what I would be working on if it were, I need to know as well as any actuary would. And then some. I will be asked if I do. By the book. Which is at least as good as was used.

But it’s the weekend. So let’s pretend I know that just as well. And work in some more sleep before we get another start on redecorating the other parts of the surrounding hallways and rooms and yards. Shall we not.

That was a question. I have my reasons for raising it. (And they’re never going to know what hit them.)

I haven’t been sleeping very much the past several nights. Can’t drift back off after waking about 3am, usually been giving up and getting up to work or read by 4am. Haven’t been finding afternoon naps within reach, except for a very brief one right after Thanksgiving dinner. But then am nodding off earlier than usual in the evenings. Enough days like that, and the whole cycle will shift, like some personal multi-hour version of daylight savings time.

Today, I’ll be checking a powerpoint presentation Nat wants me to review. But will do that on Susan‘s red Vaio laptop. After behaving for three crashfree days in response to being thrown on the floor, Sheeba has been backsliding, so once again can’t be relied upon.

Today I’ll finish decorating the foyer “Hallmark” tree, then maybe experiment quilting a slideshow on it. We need to finish up the week’s pool work, and I might trim a little in the yard while outside. We won’t be going to the UH-Rice Bayou Bowl, but will quite likely watch it on television. And I think we’re meeting Nat afterward for dinner up on that side of town.

In between, I’ll keep decorating the edges around here, probably with an eye toward graphing out some of the other data I’ve collected from S&P 500 companies with September 30 fiscal yearends.

Veteran’s Day Off

leave a comment »

G-man that I am, I’m supposed to take today off. So I’ll catch some of the sun following after this morning’s gullywasher.

Organize some blog clutter. Catch up on some blogsurfing. Piddle with a chore or two. Keep APM calculations clicking away in the background. Watch the stock market fall.

Clear more files off sheeba. Get the new keyboard working on Susan’s computer, so sheeba can retire.

On Sporadic Sleep

leave a comment »

That should be the last time in my life that I put up with chili hot dogs. Susan made me two good ones for lunch yesterday, and my throat and stomach have not been settled since, despite the new sample meds the doc gave me this past week.

I must have been awake 4 dozen times or more last night, with never more than 10-15 minutes of sleep during the longest time down. Several times I did try to just resign and stay up, but then would get drowsy enough to drop back off, only to wake again a few minutes later.

I did have one amusing little dream that managed to be remembered, dream memory being a trick I’ve had difficulty doing the past few weeks. John McCain was being driven by his wife and aides to the polling booths to vote, when they came upon a huge caravan of other cars. “That’s Obama,” exclaimed McCain, recognizing his opponent’s car leading the crowd, “Don’t follow him, don’t follow him, turn, turn, turn!!” But they’re going where we were supposed to be, McCain’s wife fretted, wondering which way they should go now. “Doesn’t matter,” McCain blustered, “As long as we don’t wind up where they do.” Last we saw of them in the dream, they were wandering lost in the Nevada desert, low on gas, a dwindling group of tired joggers padding along behind them.

No Hurry

leave a comment »

This is late for me to be waking, and I could have slept on another hour without rolling over once, yet I wake more suddenly than I need to. I thought to get out there and vacuum around before Kya‘s arrival, not having gotten the memo that she would be AWOL today. So no hurry, we’ll get to chores later in the day.

So the markets will be open today, not joining the federal government, some banks, some schools, and others in celebrating Columbus Day? OK then I’ll have an eye on Wall Street’s reaction to the weekend’s G-7 crisis management hopes as I putter through the next round of APM tweaks. But I won’t add Friday’s APM figure until I get a corporate bond interest rate to go along with stock prices and other data, and so far the Fed hasn’t gotten around to updating one of the key interest rate numbers the APM currently relies on. So no hurry, we’ll just smooth out some rough edges on the APM while we wait.

The sun is peeking through the blinds. A good day for tending to the pool, for walking the dogs, maybe even for some errand runs. But not the leaf-changing sort of autumn day I miss from the northeast. So no hurry, we’ll just wake up slowly and let the morning sun do its thing.

Tangled Up In Dylan

leave a comment »

Recently I’ve been dreaming a lot of a new Dylan album, all new material, the songs all deep and haunting, in last night’s version all but the last song dark with warning, but the last song lifting out with bright promise. In last night’s dream, the entire album played as background music to scenes in the blocks nearby the pre-9/11 WTC as lawlessness was the order, and we were stalked and attacked several times.

Less than interested in continuing those scenes farther than they kept persisting in reaching, I woke and re-started my dreaming. The Manhattan scenes were gone as desired, but Dylan’s new album continued playing in the background.

Early Saturday

leave a comment »

So what shall we make of this Saturday? Up early to get the kittens down to the pet clinic for their surgeries. After a minor spell of insomnia eased by Tony Montana inviting us to “Say hello to my little friend!” After konking out early from a mild but unwelcome relapse of this past week’s flu. After a failed run through Barnes & Noble, exiting with nothing in hand. After fighting the urge to veg, opting instead for dinner out at Chipotle. After a Friday that felt like a vacuum.

Spitting Image

leave a comment »

“spitting in wine glass”

Huh? Well, so last night I reinstated a practice I’ve not done for years: keeping a pen and some blank paper close at hand on my nightstand, then jotting down notes as I drowse half-awake during the night, sometimes an idea for an image of a poem, sometimes something I might want to sketch, sometimes an idea for my work, but usually just a scrap of a dream. Typically limiting the note to the bare essential of what I figure will trigger my memory the following morning.

So, this morning’s scribble was supposed to be enough to flip the switch on for a dream I had during my first two hours of sleep. At the time I wrote it, I remember holding out hopes that I would also remember the preceding dream sequence, which at the time was still fresh enough to feel like an obvious prelude to the spitting scene. And then a whole series of followthrough sequences, all of which felt too obvious to me at the time, so even during drowsing moments I felt no necessity to write down anything further.

Alas and alak! Now, all I have is a tangled bedhead that distantly senses that the spitting was a sacred ritual, accepted and expected by the recipient of the wine, not at all meant as an insult. But none of the rest of last night’s dreaming survived. All ran off, laughing at that scribbled note left on my nightstand.

Unregulated

leave a comment »

Stayed up past 1:30 this morning, fun reviewing and editing a draft regulation.

Cuddles woke me up again around 5am. Blue had been booted from the room before midnight. So having nobody else to pester, Cuddles took it upon herself to try to keep me from dozing back off. When she finally crawled under the blanket and went after my feet, she joined Blue.

A little more dozing, then I was back at the regulations by 6am.

Wall Blueprint

leave a comment »

wall blueprint

After 20 years of dreaming about it and dabbling around the edges at it, yesterday evening I finally began building the Wall, what some at my old workplace had described as a virtual version of the way my head views the work I do. Once finally launched into the project, I could have worked at it all night long, but tried to force myself to stop around 1am. Attempting to sleep with my brain running near light speed didn’t work, however, so I pretty much spent the morning rolling from one side to the other to sift things around up there, like a cement mixer. In the process managing to sketch out the Wall in my hair by the time I finally sat up this morning.

Just a Little Hard

just a little hard

Susan‘s feeling a little better today, but I’ll still want her to have someone here with her all day. Moms don’t know how to be sick, since they’re never supposed to be.

Along with the usual work, I’ll annoy myself today doing some of the advance paperwork for the expenses I’ll have for the training sessions scheduled next week in the Big Easy. At least I won’t need to make airline reservations: little did we know, but we’re already too close, so I’ll just feed my love for driving.

Accidental Telecommuter

accidental telecommuter

I had planned to commute into the office for work today. But upon reaching a major birthday, Susan decided to break one of the most basic rules of the Mom’s Union: for the first time in the decade I’ve known her, she’s confined to her bed sick. So I’ll do my work from the house today and pretend to be a nurse. (This from the same man who melted the steam cleaner yesterday. She’d better not ask me for any hot tea.)
