As Expected

leave a comment »

Patterns shown by certain charts demonstrate once again that one need not collect all the stars in the galaxy to get a pretty good idea what the night sky looks like. As expected. In this case, meaning representational. Characteristic. Sufficiently typical. At least one of us will still find solitude in exploring stretches others never get around to visiting, but even the outliers we find won’t rewrite any books.

That doesn’t mean I have a clue where that $70 billion number for an increase is coming from. I still think somebody’s smoking something left over from the 60s. Does it not bother anybody that that’s completely off the current chart? And what became of smoothing, corridors, and expected service? Or are we phasing in phase 2 already? So let’s see now, what them quarterlies are leaking out to us. As expected. In this case, meaning that what some have called expected is not necessarily remotely realistic. Watch for something no higher than $40 billion increase for the galaxy, with maybe $30-35 billion for the constellation – still enough of a leap to give pause to any premature market recovery, since earnings forecasts have not yet factored these numbers in, but no more than half the $70 speculation. At least one of us is not all that surprised, although don’t hold your breath waiting for a corrected number to sneak into the final report.

Milk Day

We’re not going to that parade. We get to recycle. We won’t sit around the emergency room all day. We get to show good will.

And do whatever we want.

Celebrate the final day of a failed government. Lament yesterday’s extinction of two bird species. Clean Gertie’s cage. Commemorate Edgar Allen’s 200th. Go out skateboarding.

Catch up on my writing, maybe stretch into another chapter or two. Clean up revisions on the metric. Read at least nine poems. Putter.

Sit outside in the sun. Walk. Sleep off this headache. Rest.

Drink milk. Drink a lot of milk. It’s a good day to drink milk.

License to Skill

Lost this morning’s dream on the force of last night’s closing music, Dylan channeling Marley, filling the corners of the room like Saturday morning’s first light.

I need to make some concrete progress today, make it a day to look back at like when I used to bicycle centuries without complaint. Focus on things I can get done, things I do well. Kickstart this year in a meaningful direction. A predictable direction, one might even say. It can be done, no BS.

Now that I’ve got the steam cleaner unclogged, today would be good for clogging it up again. And for vacuuming the pool, which looks like it’s been collecting enough debris to make birds’ nests for the entire neighborhood. And to clean my nightstand . . . again. And maybe give Gertie a clean cage to start her year out on the same page. All these things I can do, then still have enough time left for making more of the day, if I don’t spend all morning lounging over the Journal (from IE, no less, managing to clear out some of the hairballs accumulating in my e-mail inbox).

I’ll start reorganizing the files on Jeanette. The 20+ gig she still has open is more than adequate, of course; but it’s amazing how quickly I can fill trunks in her attic. Like, still getting used to camera settings, so feeding her a 1.7gig video from the UH bowl win (which I’ll maybe delete anyway, since it failed to capture what I had hoped to record) – no more than a dozen more of those, and Jeanette would be all bloated out. Given how I see Jeanette growing, today might be as good a time as any to open up some more reliable on-line storage than what I’ve been using.

I will write more on the book today. Materially more. Without allowing myself to get distracted too much by background research: I know I still need to find what I was looking for yesterday (I can’t possibly be the only one on the face of the planet who remembers the spark that set Black Monday off), but I can’t let that slow me down on the writing itself.

Your to do list looks like you’re likely to get more done today than I might. Want to trade?

Recharging

Lining up HAL, elgie, the bluetooth, the zen, my electric shaver and camera batteries for their Sunday morning recharging. Anything I’m forgetting to plug in for its juice? My own head, maybe?

Sync to the zen: NPR Wait Wait podcasts for November 23 and 30, plus the free mp3 song handed out to fans who register with Bob’s website. Camera pic files dumped. Rummaged through my nightstand drawer and computer case, looking for the sync USB cord for my own brain, still can’t find where I put it.

Began puttering around with Google’s new “wiki” tools on its Internet searches.

Cleared more than 150 more messages out of my main e-mail inbox, bringing my backlog down below 500. Am clearing through more of the old pic files, sending some over to online albums, cutting another CD for the offline attic. Reorganizing the work bags carrying current traffic. Once again tidying my nightstand and bathroom sink areas. Might comb my hair.

Book Knowledge

To the minute. Of when my alarm would have awakened me. If this were a work day.

Which maybe it should be. Since what I would be working on if it were, I need to know as well as any actuary would. And then some. I will be asked if I do. By the book. Which is at least as good as was used.

But it’s the weekend. So let’s pretend I know that just as well. And work in some more sleep before we get another start on redecorating the other parts of the surrounding hallways and rooms and yards. Shall we not.

That was a question. I have my reasons for raising it. (And they’re never going to know what hit them.)

I haven’t been sleeping very much the past several nights. Can’t drift back off after waking about 3am, usually been giving up and getting up to work or read by 4am. Haven’t been finding afternoon naps within reach, except for a very brief one right after Thanksgiving dinner. But then am nodding off earlier than usual in the evenings. Enough days like that, and the whole cycle will shift, like some personal multi-hour version of daylight savings time.

Today, I’ll be checking a powerpoint presentation Nat wants me to review. But will do that on Susan‘s red Vaio laptop. After behaving for three crashfree days in response to being thrown on the floor, Sheeba has been backsliding, so once again can’t be relied upon.

Today I’ll finish decorating the foyer “Hallmark” tree, then maybe experiment quilting a slideshow on it. We need to finish up the week’s pool work, and I might trim a little in the yard while outside. We won’t be going to the UH-Rice Bayou Bowl, but will quite likely watch it on television. And I think we’re meeting Nat afterward for dinner up on that side of town.

In between, I’ll keep decorating the edges around here, probably with an eye toward graphing out some of the other data I’ve collected from S&P 500 companies with September 30 fiscal yearends.

Veteran’s Day Off

leave a comment »

G-man that I am, I’m supposed to take today off. So I’ll catch some of the sun following after this morning’s gullywasher.

Organize some blog clutter. Catch up on some blogsurfing. Piddle with a chore or two. Keep APM calculations clicking away in the background. Watch the stock market fall.

Clear more files off sheeba. Get the new keyboard working on Susan’s computer, so sheeba can retire.
