Unwanted Commute

leave a comment »

Just can’t win this afternoon. Heading east up the Beltway access road away from Beamer toward Hughes is not my normal outbound commute route. But after sitting through almost the entire stretch I do of the Gulf Freeway south from Houston (partially due to backups from several different accidents, including one blocking half of the outbound lanes), I was too impatient to sit at the Beamer traffic light just because a few drivers more interested in their cell phone calls than the road dallied too long on the green I ought easily to have been able to make it through. But really, I can’t win. I would have also easily made it through this upcoming traffic light without needing to stop, had it not been for an 18-wheeler deciding to park watching a green light until the very last instant. Remind me, please: if I have to stay in the office through 4pm ever again, I swear I will stay and work an additional three hours, just to spare myself the intolerable hassle of rush hour in the Houston heat.

Only good part of today’s commute: my monthly fuel stop revealed that the Blue Bug got over 40 mpg again on its most recent tank of gas, despite adding some local driving to the usual commuting routine.

Beam Me Away

Note to Blue Bug: For the remainder of June, do not use the outbound commute route that goes down Beamer. Our South Belt Leader chirps that the work might be completed in half the scheduled time. Fine if it is. Meanwhile, this is not a good stretch on which to be wasting precious fuel.

Running On Empty

running on empty blue bug gas

filling upMy past tank of gas gave my the lowest mileage since I began keeping records. That’s probably because Susan borrowed the Blue Bug during the month for some local driving, versus the highway commuting more commonly the road it gets.

And this is of course the highest price the Blue Bug has had to pay for its fuel. That’s probably because of that war of choice.

60k Should Be Enough

60k should be enough
To paraphrase and reapply a mythical comment supposedly made by Bill Gates.

This morning’s commute the Blue Bug reached a major milestone. Not bad for almost ten years of service, especially since its odometer was well over halfway there by the time I inherited the vehicle from Susan when we got the Burb, which easily passed 60k before we traded that in for the Bitty Burb, which also has long since passed this mark.

Slow Stretch of Commuting

leave a comment »

Usually my outbound commute is easier than my inbound one, since I catch less of the rush hour. This afternoon, I’m out a little later than usual, so I’m not terribly surprised that traffic is a bit heavier than what I’m used to.

But I added maybe 10-15 minutes (maybe 25%-50% of usual commuting duration) for some stop-and-go that began maybe a mile north of the 610 loop, southbound down the Gulf Freeway. If I’d kept this video going just 2-3 seconds longer, I might have caught the flashing lights in the left lane at the farthest end of the scene at the very end of this clip. By the time I actually reached that point 5 minutes later, the accident had been cleared to the side, and traffic was starting to clear.

Commuters’ Caravan

commuters' caravan
Back when this week was just about waking up, I scheduled today as one when I’ll work from the house. Noodlenoggin that I am, I left the scrap of paper with my hotel reservation number for next week at my desk yesterday, when at the office I made the mistake of thinking that paper to be on my nightstand. So I’m heading into the office merely to retrieve that scrap of paper. (Then as will be noted via twitter, I’ll be heading right back out.)

That gray vehicle leading the ‘stang ahead of me is Susan in the Bitty Burb. She’s babysitting today. (And as I’ll be passing along via twitter, her baby is a cutie.)

And of course, that white ‘stang sandwiched between us is the only one of the three of us on a normal schedule this morning: that’s Nat heading off to classes (including a geology lab test).

Ironic post to be making right after my Earth Day memory.

Wet Commute

t commute
Skies that have been dark all day long open up for my outbound commute, but fail to stack up the traffic very much along 59 into town or 45 south out.

And although they have a tornado watch posted until 7:00 tonight, Mother Nature gives me none to watch.
