Those Days

Week 6 — From Home Further into Louisiana and Waco TX

Day 37. Finally not letting the remnants of my head/chest cold keep me bed-bound any longer, I’m back up to speed, at least enough to reach Iowa . . . Iowa, LA, that is. And just in time!—any more lying in bed, and I would have fallen behind schedule for making it to Columbus Circle NYC as planned! But now at least I’ve passed the 10% milestone.

Day 38. I’ve made it to our state capital!—Austin TX. I think I’ll check in on a few of our legislators. I have some items to place on their agenda.

Day 39. I close out 2017 in San Marcos TX, helped the last few miles there by some dancing at our New Year’s Eve party.

Day 40. I pushed a few extra miles in today to make it to UMHB, where Kelly started his college education. And after last week’s winter cold had me in bed long enough to use up almost every minute of my margin, I’ve now built back a small edge: if I were to keep the average pace I’ve been doing since this past Thanksgiving morn, I would arrive in Manhattan a day earlier than needed to meet my year’s goal.

Day 41. Since this past Thanksgiving morn, I’ve walked more than 300 kilometers.

Day 42. I close out the 6th week of this trek arriving in Waco TX, nearly 25 years after the siege.

  1. I’m going to begin keeping my Fitbit charger in the car. It’s so natural a place to keep it, I don’t know why it never occurred to me before. Like yeah, sure, my Fitbit’s nag feature has this penchant for encouraging me to go for a walk when we’re cruising down the highway at 60mph. But seriously, that’s the best time to be giving its battery a boost instead.

If I go enough days without driving or riding, I’ll know where to find it . . . and then will just need to remember to put it back!
