Those Days

Week 5 — From Home into Louisiana and Lake Sam Rayburn TX

Day 29. Starting my 5th week of Walk 2017 by reaching Jasper TX, the “Butterfly Capital of Texas.” Forevermore celebrating the life of James Byrd Jr.

Day 30. I close out the initial month of Walk 2017 by passing the 150-mile mark, enough to take me about 17 miles into Louisiana.

Day 31. And today I’ve made it to Lake Charles LA.

Day 32. I’ve now walked enough since Thanksgiving to make it from home to Lake Sam Rayburn in Texas.

But then that’s pretty much it for this week. Day 33 was Christmas Day 2017; and the hubbub of the morning and afternoon with family combined with the hard descent of a vicious head/chest cold to keep my walking down to about a third of my daily quota. The next two days were far worse, pretty much keeping to my bed. So I end the week by using up the margin I’d built up: as long as I get back up to speed, I’ve not yet fallen behind; but I can’t let this cold keep me down very much longer.

  1. I’m going to begin keeping my Fitbit charger in the car. It’s so natural a place to keep it, I don’t know why it never occurred to me before. Like yeah, sure, my Fitbit’s nag feature has this penchant for encouraging me to go for a walk when we’re cruising down the highway at 60mph. But seriously, that’s the best time to be giving its battery a boost instead.

If I go enough days without driving or riding, I’ll know where to find it . . . and then will just need to remember to put it back!
