Walked Off

Christmas 2014 I received my first Fitbit, so began a virtual journey from home to New York City, with hopes of walking there in my mind over the course of a year: Just Walk Away. Sickness along the way combined with a changing schedule and other distractions to get me only maybe up to Baltimore; I was unsure exactly how far because I ceased even keeping track somewhere just north of my virtual Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Even so, I demonstrated my walking goals to be fitting. And I learned some rather interesting things along the way, since I fed myself along the way with Internet readings of sites I might want to visit were I to be there in person.

So alright, almost 3 years later, I’m launching a similar virtual journey. This one begins Thanksgiving Day morning, 2017. My goal will be to walk enough steps by Thanksgiving Eve 2018 to have taken me to Columbus Circle in Manhattan, then to walk enough steps on Thanksgiving Day 2018 to take me down the Macy’s Day Parade.

As I did 3 years ago, I will document my progress by reaching out in every direction. Meaning that if I reach my goal within this year, then this post’s pages (via the numbered links at the bottom) will include a travelogue of many of the sites I would want to visit with SuziQ if we had the time and finances to do so.

  1. I’m going to begin keeping my Fitbit charger in the car. It’s so natural a place to keep it, I don’t know why it never occurred to me before. Like yeah, sure, my Fitbit’s nag feature has this penchant for encouraging me to go for a walk when we’re cruising down the highway at 60mph. But seriously, that’s the best time to be giving its battery a boost instead.

If I go enough days without driving or riding, I’ll know where to find it . . . and then will just need to remember to put it back!
