Just Walk Away

Week #7: 2015 Feb 5 – Feb 11

Kicking off my 7th week of tracking my walking with my Fitbit gadget, I reached the level of having walked half a million steps since Christmas 2014. At least that — I’m still getting frequent undercounting of my actual steps and mileage by as much as 15-20%, yet I resist tinkering with stride settings to “compensate.” So all of these records will continue to be based on what the Fitbit actually tracks, without worrying about figuring out how much further I might have actually reached if I’d counted every single step.

A word on my maps — I’ve grown most comfortable with the maps I can clip from Yahoo, so will be using those for the remainder of this post. And when I can find a few spare minutes, I’ll be circling back to earlier portions of this post to replace any of my previous maps that had not been using Yahoo.

  • Through February 5 of 2015 I had walked far enough since starting to use the Fitbit Flex, that from home I could have walked to Shreveport LA, well up the road toward my goal for this year.

  • Through February 6 of 2015 I had walked far enough since starting to use the Fitbit Flex, that from home I could have walked to Dallas TX, with enough left over to be well on my way out as quickly as ever.

  • Through February 7 of 2015 I had walked far enough since starting to use the Fitbit Flex, that from home I could have walked to Kerrville in the Texas Hill Country, a frequent destination of SuziQ’s family during her childhood.

  • Through February 8 of 2015 I had walked far enough since starting to use the Fitbit Flex, that from home I could have walked to Plano, Texas, quickly leaving Dallas behind.

  • Through February 9 of 2015 I had walked far enough since starting to use the Fitbit Flex, that from home I could have walked to Fort Worth, Texas.

  • Based on numerous comparisons with alternative reliable guides, I figure that my Fitbit gadget undercounts my walking by at least a mile a day: instead of the average of 6 miles per day since Christmas that I’ve been credited with, I’ve most likely walked at least 7 miles daily. For today, chalk up at least another mile left uncounted: absent-minded, I left the gadget charging back home while out walking to some morning activities. Even so, through February 10 of 2015 the Fitbit counts that I had walked enough since Christmas, that from home I could have walked to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

  • From Christmas 2014 through February 11 of 2015, I walked the equivalent of walking from home to Celina, Texas. Hey, Jen!
