12/31 10-K Season Open!

The 2008 annual reports for companies with fiscal years ending December 31 are starting to trickle in!! It’s only a faucet drip so far – measured on the basis of 2007 pension assets, so far we only have about 1/20 of 1% of my total universe (S&P Composite 1500 plus some extras, such as major insurance companies), barely a teaspoon in the swimming pool. But it will build daily from here to an avalanche by the end of the month, by which time we’ll have virtually all 2008 data in hand.

That teaspoon in the swimming pool isn’t really enough to rely on just yet, but for the record, that very minuscule subset’s pension plans saw funded status drop to 67% by the close of 2008, a drastic drop from 91% the previous year. For the full 12/31 subset, we expect the funded status as of the close of 2008 to be higher (a few ticks north of 80%) and the drop to have been slightly less severe (with the full subset being less heavily invested in equities and having more foreign plan exposure, both of which should moderate the decline).

(Remember, as I’ve previously disclaimed, posts such as this represent efforts of my favorite pastime. My formal work does not involve any of this, and none of it represents any position or comment that should in any way be attributed to my employer. Likewise, as always, it represents general personal impressions and should not be treated or used as formal professional advice.)

long loop

at a picnic pavilion on th south side at th edge of a forest, a cousin was pulling at a bench as if it were a lever that would send th scene back to where it was, back to reality. apparently, she had brought us into th dream reality where we now were by pulling that bench, so was hoping to take up back by pulling it again. when that failed to work, we went on with what we knew was coming

abruptly some of th moms and dads finished their lunch and got up to head out to th cars, taking several of th children with them. i wasn’t sure if i had enough time to finish my meal or if i needed to go out with them, but tried to gather th rest of my food along with my equipment and belongings in my arms, and followed after them. they were still in th parking lot when i arrived there, so i went to th door in th wall of an empty warehouse, where we were to board

an amusement ride was boarding there, and when it was done i found that our cars had departed, leaving me behind. i ran after, trying to call out after them, but was left alone. i began to walk toward home, although i knew that th five-mile stretch would take me hours, instead of th minutes i had before i ought to have been there

i stopped at a shop after th first stretch, just to check to see if i could get a ride from anyone. someone beckoned me to meet him by th side of th building. when i met him out there, he revealed that he had some old grudge against me and intended to beat me up. i went back out in th street to avoid him, but one of his allies caught up with me. i hit him several times, then began beating his head against th pavement. he kept threatening what he would do to me when he broke free, so i continued beating his head as hard as i could down on th concrete, while off in th nearby field someone from th shop drove my other enemy away. blood and tissue was hanging down from th face of th person who had tried to attack me by th time i finally released him and continued walking back to where i was supposed to be

back there, i rejoined my party at a picnic pavilion on th east side on th ocean beach. a storm was approaching, so we gathered to move on. as my father left briefly to get something for our trip, a cousin pulled at one of th benches – we tried to warn her, but she pulled it before we could stop her. as she did, th scene shifted to another reality, and we began th loop again, but from this different side

[much much more throughout th entire loop, but these were th highlights i recall]
