FYE 9/30/08 – S&P500 v S&P1500

To illustrate and analyze basic underlying trends for defined benefit pension plans, one can usually be content to examine the companies in the S&P 500 (which is the set I use for the Aftermath Pension Metric). I do track other sets, but generally find material differences only in alternative sets with significantly different constituencies, such as the Fortune 1000 (which, for instance, includes large mutual life insurance companies excluded from the S&P sets).

For the subset of companies with fiscal years ending September 30, the aggregate funded status of global pension plans sponsored by companies in the S&P Composite 1500 for years ending in 2004 through 2008, as contrasted with the same subset within the S&P 500, has not differed enough to show on a graph – the two lines are virtually the same.

Aggregate Funded Status for Global Pensions of Companies with FYE 9/30
  Set                               2004 2005 2006 2007 2008
  S&P 500 76.6% 72.4% 85.0% 93.8% 86.7%
  S&P Composite 1500 77.2% 73.0% 84.5% 93.6% 87.0%

Punchline: With respect to pension plan trends, using the S&P Composite 1500 set adds little if any information that could not have been obtained by using the S&P 500 set.
