Attendence Not Required

First Bush found himself an excuse to scurry off to Crawford instead of facing up to his own dwindling party faithful about why he remains so oblivious to the damage he has done to GOP presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial chances this November. Then McCain suggested he might rather telecommute to the convention from the flooded home of any sympathetic Gulf coast victim that might be found still trusting in FEMA. Now Schwarzenegger has ducked out, giving Democratic-led state legislatures nationwide a whole new strategy for keeping future GOP conventions under-attended. And Larry Craig . . . well, it is the Minneapolis airport they had him flying into, after all.

So as not to have GOP rank-and-file party members feel left out of the growing absenteeism, the following absence excuse form will be accepted, if accompanied by a suitable donation to help defray GOP expenses for all the empty seats:

Running to Nowhere

People are learning that [GOP presumptive VP candidate Palin] pandered to us by saying, I’m for this’ … and then when she found it was politically advantageous for her nationally, abruptly she starts using the very term that she said was insulting.

Bob Weinstein,
mayor of Ketchikan,
site of one end of the “bridge to nowhere,”
an Alaskan pork project that had been enthusiastically supported by Palin
until after Congress eliminated federal money for the project

So much for Palin’s biggest applause line from her introduction by McCain as his running mate. Turns out that her strongest experience has been in making trips to Washington, D.C., at her constituents’ expense to obtain as much federal money as possible for local sewer projects and the like. But like a good up-and-coming politician, conveniently portraying her position as being the opposite when it suits the politics (oh, and when one has to pay one’s own way, without a federal handout).

Gee, that deep experience will come in handy if we send her to carry on four more years of the Bush Administration, won’t it? Maybe she can be put in charge of dealing with visitors from the other 49 states, every single one of which has received less federal money per citizen than Alaska, in no small part due to her “experience.”
