Lutheran Wine

leave a comment »

This evening Susan and I went to a wine tasting party hosted by the Lutheran church for which she now works. A casual affair for which each couple was instructed to bring an Italian wine, then everyone assigned to one of two tables, each with up to six different wines.

Ours had only five, since one couple failed to show up. And technically, we only had four: since there was no advance coordination, and since the couples assigned to each table were designated in advance versus on the basis of wines brought, two of the wine bottles brought to our group turned out to be exactly the same. (Not that our quite nondiscriminating palates were able to distinguish that fact.) We brought the Allegrini Palazzo della Torre 2004, managing the second highest aggregate score within our group, the highest score going one of the duplicate bottles of a more mediocre wine. (Proving again that none of us really knew much more than whether or not we liked whatever happened to be in our glass at any random stage of the evening.)

Lasagna dinner followed, with enough leftovers to feed the Lutheran daycare kids (and me too) for the rest of the month.

Although I drank as much wine in one evening as I normally do over the course of an entire year, I didn’t get my usual headache. Susan is probably correct in guessing that has more to do with the fact that since I normally only drink wine at business functions, the headache probably comes more from the stress I inevitably get at those events, versus the improbable chance that the wine tonight had some special blessing bestowed upon it.

Guest in the Nest

with one comment

Our temporarily empty nest has a guest today: Baby K! The kittens spend her visit quarantined in the back room, since their natural impulse is to leave their marks, but K has more than enough animal friends left with Dylan, Lady, Tiny, and Kitty curious about the little person.

We’ll spend a little time out in the bright sunshine by the pool. We’ll get Susan to change our diaper when we’re in the middle of eating our lunch. We’ll protect our valuables from lurking purse snatchers. We’ll take a nap, a very teensy nap, two minutes tops. We’ll get ink on our clothes. We’ll be more gentle with the puppy than we are with our playmates at daycare. And we’ll play play play play play all the rest of the day.

new house

leave a comment »

i like th new house paul s and his family have moved into, and a common friend of ours has moved in next door to him. th corner house third down is vacant and boarded up, th previous occupants having abandoned it after foreclosure. i express an interest in purchasing it for us. paul snorts at th thought that an actuary would ever be able to afford housing in such an exclusive neighborhood, indicating that even th basement-sale price of that plain vanilla corner house stands at $702k. he and our common friend may have had occupations with lower annual salaries, but both had opportunities for huge windfalls from important discoveries, something well known to be lacking in th actuarial field, which was seen as a dying profession. i notice his house has nice rooms up on his attic floor, am about to say something about that making it more than a 2-story house, when i notice that several of th other levels in his house are multi-level, giving him at least 7 stories, all in a very exquisitely designed frame
