Grilled Steak

leave a comment »

The grill was cranky this afternoon, so some of these steaks turned out more rare than others, on their own, without my help. With the potatoes Susan baked, dinner for us along with Kelly, Nat & Brandon, and Lindsey (who finished off an entire large steak while everyone else settled for half).

[Note To Self – Do not treat the dogs to leftover steak bits, no matter how much they beg. Or if you do, then at least don’t steam clean the carpet until after the next morning.]

Must be Texans… the lowest form of white man there is.

Al Sieber, Chief of Scouts in Geronimo: An American Legend

And a middle-aged Texan man who goes trolling Krogers grocery store for women half his age is the lowest form of that.

Heating Pad Tangle

leave a comment »

The white cord belongs to the heating pad, which only last night was plugged into the end slot of the power strip on my side of the bed so I could work some heat into the muscle I pulled in my back a few days ago. The security cord and power cord for Harry were already in place at the time, and haven’t been touched since I plugged the heating pad in. My home laptop was also already plugged in, but all I’ve done is lift the laptop from the side of the bed when I wanted to use it, then place it back where it was when done.

I swear, even if I wanted to practice my knot skills for a boy scout merit badge, this one would be beyond me: I would not know how to wind the heating pad or laptop in and around and back in such a manner as to produce this chaos. No matter. Cords always know how to do it on their own, without assistance.

Doesn’t French Cuisine Use It?

leave a comment »

Yesterday I asked to make sure we had everything I would need to make french toast this morning. Yes, Susan assured me, we have the milk and the eggs, and there is Texas toast in the freezer. So I was out in the kitchen this morning earlier than she and Nat were awake, setting out the eggs so they’d be room temp, then poking in the freezer for the box that said Texas toast, setting that out to defrost. I did notice that the label on the box said a little bit more than Texas toast, but shrugged it off, figuring I’d simply never noticed when I’ve made french toast before, maybe because Susan usually gave me slices that were already defrosted.

Nat made it into the kitchen about an hour later, pleased to see the coffee already brewed. I’d already put the box of Texas toast back in the freezer with what I wouldn’t be using, but she recognized what particular kind of Texas toast it was in the bag. So was puzzled, but shrugged it off, figuring maybe she’d finally discovered the secret ingredient that makes my french toast something she raves about.

Susan, who made it into the kitchen shortly thereafter, knew better. She knows I’m simply a noodlenoggin.

No Delay, No Spread

Today I will not wait to get started.

Today my back will move without pain.

Today I will compose my first snapshot of how pension costs would have looked without the deferral and smoothing methodologies that have been in force the past two decades. I will know it when I see it.

Today I will send out my collection of scratch marks on the draft regulation I’ve been inspecting so closely. Reserving the substantive comment for next Monday and Wednesday.

Today I will search for a new home and auto insurer. One for whom their own claims mean something honest when the insured has never made any.

Today I will begin to move videos for which I made the mistake of using Google to host. I really should have known better.

Today I will steam clean. And I will bob in the pool. Divergent approaches to relaxation.

And today I will make some of my best french toast ever for breakfast. Then maybe grill for dinner, if so desired.
