Kitchen Congestion

Kitty and Blue don’t get much of an opportunity to work on their friendship when the kitchen traffic gets so heavy so quickly.

Flying Right

Southwest Airlines has earned a profit during the most recent fiscal quarter, proving an airline can survive current economic conditions and keep its customers without charging them to travel with luggage and piling on all the other indignities that dying outfits like American Airlines resort to.

Still Above Ground Level

About a week ago, some analyst being interviewed on CNBC opined that the DJI is primed for leaping to 16k. Without qualifying whether or not that might happen sometime maybe 10 to 20 years from now. Responding to the interviewer’s disbelief by suggesting that it’s where the DJI belongs today (versus being in low 11k regions as it then was).

As silly as he sounds, he’s probably not doing anything much worse than updating his perspective since April, when there were others like him frequently on looking for a 15k-16k DJI at the same time I called the ceiling at 13k. And if he’s simply begrudging the disappearance of his dream market like a mirage, then he may be one of many who are hoping that last week’s fireworks after the recent dip below 11k marked the bottom of the bear.

Not. The most we saw earlier this month was the carpeting on maybe the fourth or fifth floor of a building of which we’ll be seeing the basement before this can all be called over. Last week’s optimism doesn’t surprise me – I’d seen June’s declines as being too fast, so I’d anticipated enough of an increase to keep a day trader happy for a spell. In my opinon, that only puts us back on track toward a Labor Day when a 12k ceiling would be a pleasant surprise, meaning I expect us to be between 10k and 11k by September.

Just one investor’s opinion. But since there’s not enough new money out there to come anywhere near squeezing a 16k DJI into existence by balancing out the net $400 million per market day automatically scheduled for permanent departure from equities, for now I’m keeping our personal equity allocation solidly at zero percent for the forseeable future. And get ready to go down another floor in the building.

Watering Hole Standoff

leave a comment »

Since making ours their home, Blue and Cuddles have been in quarantine back in the master bedroom and bathroom, first while we rid them of the two or three fleas that they brought along, then another few weeks while Blue was working past a bit of an eye infection. And they seemed pretty comfortable in their refuge, clearly unsure they were ready to meet with those beasts they spied on their little excursions through the main house on their way to and back from the vet.

But yesterday they both made a dash for the door when I entered the bedroom late in the afternoon, so I let them explore. They are slowly getting used to the dogs, enough that I expect to see them chasing each other within a week. Precious and Kitty are less pleased with the little newcomers, although neither cat shows any serious antagonism.

Besides, Blue should be more upset that Kitty stole one of the kitten toys to make his sacrifice to the water gods.

vacation-bound

[final 2 chapters of a 12-chapter book, th earlier chapters lost]

peter c is explaining to th group why th company wanted to avoid getting highlighted on one of th late night comedy shows. i vehemently protest. yes, any specific mention of any particular company on any of those shows usually has a biting taste of satire that sometimes makes one wonder how th shows keep from being sued, but i feel strongly that th mention of th company name together with th word “pension” together with people’s grave concerns, combined with how most people do understand th late night jokes well enough that they tend to attract more attention than any small business they might lose, would be worth th mention. i went so far as to say that given th choice between mention in th wall street journal vs mention on letterman, i would want th mention on letterman, since almost every focus on pension topics in th wall street journal is significantly flawed, but that those flaws tend to go dangerously unnoticed by what ought to have been a more sophisiticated audience, which turns out to be more difficult a public relations situation to handle than would be a mention by letterman. as peter stands in th center of th room letting me make my case, i notice that he had a huge spiderweb attached to him reaching up to th ceiling, so i step back to finish my rant. john e joins th group late and comes over to sit near me. whispering to him, i catch him up on what peter had been claiming and how i had objected

it’s almost time for us to head off to th beaches for our vacation, but i’ve lost track of where th four kittens have scrambled off to. i figure th kids must have them, so gather my things to leave th room. from an alcove a sad little girl who’d been recuperating from a serious illness comes to me handing me one of th kittens, after she had given th kitten’s fur between its ears a very elaborate hairstyle. i pause thinking to go back to show this to you, but decide that you would already have seen and known

down th long hallway th glass door to th car rental place is locked. friendly bees that had been nearby me without bothering me suddenly become agitated at wasps who are buzzing against th glass door, and in their agitation th bees indiscriminately buzz excitedly around my head. as i fall back, i land on one of th kittens, but of course it it ok, as kittens always are

although we had originally been th first ones here, a man is standing in front of us at th glass door. but when th car rental office opens, i am beckoned forward first, because i am holding a batch of papers about vacations and rentals, with th car rental form on top. th man says he has that up in his room, just didn’t know he needed it here, but is polite about not being taken first and having to go back up to his room to get it

i sign my name in huge exaggerated cursive, some of th lower strokes of th signature crossing to th page below th rental form. i add my cell phone number after my name, then point out to th car renatl clerk that i did so. he says he thinks that a great idea, that he will have to add that to th form, and i sense he will ask th other man for th info even though it is not currently on th form. i gather all th cushions to head out to th rented car, my hand too full to get any of th cats, but th kids again seem to have that covered. absentmindedly i leave th car keys on th counter, but we don’t get past th glass door before realizing that

there are no signs directing us to where th rental cars are parked, but just past th passageway that is next to th glass door i realize that th only other door out is a very distant one at th very far end of th hallway, so i suggest it more likely that th passageway must be th obvious way to th cars. i’m no more than 2-3 feet past that passageway, but a hotel maid has come behind me carrying some boxes, and i can’t get past her holding all th cushions i’m carrying. i point out to her that it will be easier for her to back up th little distance to th glass door and allow up down th side passageway after which she can proceed on her way, versus us all going all th way down th hallway and us then having to come all th way back, and she very politely complies

we descend a dark narrow flight of stairs to th back parking lot, which has no rental cars, only a few men carrying trash to another nearby parking lot where trash trucks are waiting. we are discussing th car rental clerk’s instructions to return th car between five and six o’clock on sunday, remarking that that one hour of th day must be th only reliable time to find th car rental facility open. we are not worried about finding th car, our concerns being more focused on th weather at th beach between today and sunday, since it is currently rather stormy
