Barge Litter

leave a comment »

Obviously doesn’t make up for losing Pancake, but we’ve now taken custody of four motherless kittens said to have been discovered on a barge out in the Gulf. Currently we’re planning on permanently adopting Cuddles, the one on the left in this dinnertime pic, and Blue, the one on the right. Magellan, the one in the middle, and Baby, the sole female, not yet joining this snapshot, will be seeking a new home sometime soon.

All Wet

leave a comment »

Yesterday morning, NPR’s weather report claimed we’d have only a “slight” chance of any rain all week long, rising to at most 30% on Wednesday. I drove through hard rain in yesterday afternoon’s commute, then saw more hard rain this morning coming back from a dental appointment.

Now on an impromptu trip up to see Jenny, the only dry road we’ve seen since leaving the house was a very brief stretch through downtown Houston. The rest of this trip, south of Houston and for well more than an hour of travel north of Houston, we’ve seen steady precipitation. (And we’ll see the same thing coming back Thursday afternoon: almost continuous rain from Huntsville all the way down to the house.)

You don’t need a weatherman to know this week’s weather report has been all wet.

Vet Visit

ver visit - kitty vet visit - tiny

Tiny and Kitty get annual check-ups from the vet this morning. Tiny takes comfort on Susan‘s lap while she drives, as Kitty pants while sitting with me. Dylan was supposed to join us, but gets a break this time. Kitty weighed in at 19 lbs 4 oz, a little lower than we expected but still needing to slim down. Tiny was a shade over 10 pounds, about half Kitty’s weight, and needs to have his teeth cleaned.

Never More Clear

never more clear
Such is the case with every single snapshot I attempt to catch with this camera, would be the way it would be with any camera I had, was especially noticeable with Boo, but is never more clear than when we have a double rainbow over our house: nature is always a far better artist than any of these images can ever show. Best these might be able to do would be to spark the imagination and illuminate the memory.

This rainbow was the brighest we’ve ever seen here, after one of the most delightfully violent thunderstorms we’ve had in a long time, at least more violent than anything any recent hurricane has thown our direction — in fact, a small twister was sighted around the corner in Pearland.

Out into the Storm

leave a comment »

Kitty always likes having his water bowl filled, drinks from the bathroom sinks whenever he can convince us to turn the faucet on for him, licks the moisture from cold soda cans, and even sneaks a sip from an open toilet if he can get away with it. So this storm is too irresistable to him: the whole world has turned into one huge water bowl!!! This storm is coming in from the northeast, the opposite of our typical weather patterns, so we get a little puddle in the foyer during the brief minute that I open the front door for this video. Kitty doesn’t mind the rain at all, venturing out on the porch to watch.

Goodbye, Boo

leave a comment »

booShe purred. Just a few clicks on Father’s Day, but by Thursday she had a steady rumble loud enough to hear over most background noise. And she purred often, even in her final hours when she barely had the strength to move.

She loved to push her head between my fingers, settle her neck as tightly as possible down where my fingers met, then knead my palm with her tiny sharp claws.

She was headstrong. I might turn her slightly to where it might be more comfortable to keep holding her for an extended period, but she’d promptly turn herself back to where she wanted herself to be.

She liked having her belly rubbed. Her back feet were ticklish.

Her eyes were so very close to opening. She would have loved what she would have seen. She showed that she knew this was her home. She responded to us. She knew we loved her.

Baby Pancake had a strong set of lungs and a yowl that could be heard clear across the house when she demanded her own way. The only sounds I got the chance to memorialize were these sweet few mews.

abandoned

leave a comment »

our new kitten was near th exhaust pipe of th van, another appeared when i retrieved her, i took them both into th van, paul s took charge of them, said pat s would like th new one

we were waiting for pat to finish packing for a small excursion we had planned, paul s drove me up to where we were to pick her up, let me off to go to th restroom while we waited for her. th van was gone when i came back outside, i spent some of th time waiting for him exploring two sets of spiraling steps descending into one side of th parking lot, very curious design that all th college students knew how to quickly descend despite each step near th top being less than half a foot’s width

after some great length interspersed with conversations and occasional returns into th building, it became obvious that paul had simply abandoned me there, was not coming back. i had no alternative but to walk back, and he’d come up a distance and route meant to make that difficult

i was angry. mostly at th way he did it, simply leaving me there with no word, so that i’d been wasting time looking foolish expecting him to be back, when he was already back to his ordinary routine

outside his house lurked a dark morose woman who’d been treated similarly by him before. when she saw pat near th door she sang a sad soft song about how they’d never really known her. pat came out to greet th woman she’d previously known only as vague threat, understood immediately what had actually happened, cautioned careful secrecy because paul was home and might find them together

Fast Break

What do you usually have for breakfast?

meme from susan

A

Coffee. Who needs anything else?

Bacon egg and cheese croissant when I show up at the office. That with an apple fritter when we travel. Once in a blue moon, a cheese omelette. But even on any of those mornings, coffee would be enough on its own.

Zen Tracks [22] Manilow: Love Is A Many Splendored Thing

leave a comment »

Zen Vision MLove Is A Many Splendored ThingBarry ManilowThe Greatest Songs of the Fifties
[2:42] * *

Keep your smirks under control, but yes, I do have some Manilow on my Zen Vision:M, if only to keep the eclectic readings for my Zen up sufficiently high. Besides, I can’t be too terribly nasty toward Barry when his music is powerful enough to be used by Australian officials to deter gangs of youths from congregating in a residential area late at night and when Bob Dylan himself could hug Barry saying, “Don’t stop what you’re doing, man. We’re all inspired by you.” *smirk*

Not that I find his rendition of this title track from the 1955 flick to be anywhere near as inspiring as the original, which I’d prefer to hear syncing its way over to my Zen. Which actually is about the only reason I ever listen to this version: Barry gives me a placeholder until I can get the real deal, for which it might then give up its chair.

Meanwhile, happy birthday to Barry, who today reaches pension plans’ most common normal retirement age.

Foundling

foundling
I don’t think our new little friend is much more than two days old, if that. The vet yesterday registered her at “72 hours,” figuring the baby as likely being no more than that. But he also put her in the files at 3/10 of a pound instead of the “shade under 3 ounces” we told them our scales had said (and actually, our scale is finicky enough that she could be as low as only 2.5 ounces).

I was watching golf in between steam cleaning sessions Saturday afternoon while Susan and Nat were in the kitchen working together on Nat’s Father’s Day creations, when I overheard Nat approaching, telling someone on the phone what apparently Susan had said, that “it will depend on what Adrien says.” So as soon as she reached the door, I immediately said, “Yes,” before she could ask the question. Rule of Thumb: Never say no unless there is an absolutely good reason for doing so (in which case, the matter would not have reached me anyway, was my way of thinking). And since finding out what I was saying yes to didn’t change my answer, we’ve at least temporarily taken custody of one of our world’s newest lives. Read the rest of this entry »

Hard-Headed Woman

with one comment

The vet told us Pancake would grow up to be a strong-willed cat, and we’ll see many signs of that throughout the five short days she’ll be with us. Here, I had turned her around for a brief video, to which she responded by promptly turning herself back around to how she wanted to nap.

While Susan‘s in the doctor’s office presently deep under anesthesia, I’m out in the bitty burb watching over baby Boo, feeding her and making sure she doesn’t bake in the Houston heat and loving her all up.  She frequently twitches just as she falls asleep.
