Cold Dip

Water temperature: 77°

That’s down 5° from the comfort zone the pool gave me only two days ago. After we’d had air temps in the low 90s for several days. Then a cool front moves through, only down to the 70s, but with enough of a breeze to kick some chill into the water.

I did still make it all the way into the pool to swim down to the diving rock and back, then skim some leaves off the surface, but was back out toweling off within 5 minutes.

Even so, that’s my third consecutive day in the pool this season. Can we make it four tomorrow?

Response: 1 Dawson’s Practical Lessons in Actuarial Science http://tinyurl.com/5kogmh

Whereas, a hundred years after mine was published, nobody will remember. Dawson knew how to pick a subject that survived his own lifespan. Good actuarial sense, that.

Turning BreakingNewsOn Off

Death toll from China’s 7.9 earthquake rises to at least 7,751 in three provinces; 10,400 injured; at least 1,100 still trapped in rubble.

two successive worthless messages from more than a dozen

I’ll give them this: BreakingNewsOn gives better quality in their news feeds than the brainless headlines that MSN’s SMS service farts out. But no no no, flooding my cell phone with every new headcount from China’s earthquake today is not an alert service. If anyone seriously wants that level of coverage, then BreakingNewsOn should maybe create two separate feeds: one true “alert” feed, which would have given an alert upon the original announcement of the quake, at most followed up no sooner than 12 hours later with an initial casualty assessment; and a second feed they could label “news spam” with a straight face. But after the lack of discipline they’re shown us today, I’m turning them off.

Leaving me the Reuters alerts (true to the concept, only one single China quake alert so far, while managing to summarize many of the other top news stories that BreakingNewsOn has ignored in its indulgence over one single obsession-of-the-day) as my cell phone news source.

train ride

jim h had subway tokens for each of us in th group. he didn’t hand them out to us, rather stood at th turnstile putting in a token for each of us as we went through

i stood at th top of th steps down to th tracks, waiting for wayne. after th last of our group had descended th steps, i realized he must have gone through th turnstiles before me, so headed on down to th platform to wait with th others

while on th train, i received a phone call telling me they were looking forward to my arrival, had prepared th place special for me. i was mildly concerned that th bag i had my papers in had been stolen from where i’d left it sitting near my feet, but knew there was nothing in th bag that could not be easily replaced
