Marriott Nevermore

OK, about Marriott. For two decades or more I’ve had the sort of brand loyalty that would send me miles and hours out of my way on some trips, just to stay at what had become my home away from home. And not just to stack up award points – although those were a welcome bonus that I have used, I would have been more than willing to patronize Marriott straight out, without any extra payback.

No more. Never again. I am seriously even contemplating shrugging off the accumulated award points currently in my account. It’s not worth it to me to have a few “free” nights under this new anti-business policy they’ve apparently adpoted.

Gauging the Odds – Over Par

Someone can correct the record for me if I’ve got the details a little off, but the gist will remain the same. I’m relaxing a Sunday morning away recovering from travel fatigue after this week’s Enrolled Actuaries Meeting, waiting for the last round of the Masters to come on the air, when the Golf Channel takes to discussing one of the unlikely heroes still sticking it out ahead of Tiger on the leaders’ board. One announcer points out that the pre-tournament odds were 150 to 1 against that golfer winning the event, to which another announcer responds to the effect, “I’d like to know who was setting those odds. There were only 90 players in the field.”

Goes to prove: this is why golf announcers are not actuaries.
