5th Consecutive Year of Excess Gains

5th consecutive year of excess gains

Recovering from asset losses suffered in 2001 and 2002, pension funds have experienced investment gains in excess of the assumed rates used for pension cost calculations during each of the past 5 years. For S&P 500 companies for fiscal years 2003 through 2007, this chart shows the median expected rate of return on pension plan assets (purple with squares) as compared with the aggregate actual rate of return on pension plan assets (blue with diamonds).

Of course, weak markets at the close of last year were a major factor behind the fact that 2007 saw the lowest rate of actual asset return of these five years. Since that yearend weakness has continued into the first three months of 2008, pension plans have an uphill climb to try to make 2008 the sixth straight year of excess returns.

And Throw Away the Key

My most important list of passwords is in a file that of course is itself password protected. And although that file’s password follows a personal set of rules that are supposed to ensure I would never forget that one, even if knocked good and hard over my noodlenoggin head, it does use one of the more complicated variations of that personal set of rules. So just in case I were to ever forget that special variation, I’ve written down clues for myself, split those into several pieces, and hid them in places in my office where they’d not likely be found even if accidentally left to a new office occupant. But of course, then it takes me some detective work trying to think how I think I might have thought to remember where all those places were, then it takes me some trial-and-error to recall how I coded those pieces themselves. Then one additional lock of which I’ll not even give more than this veiled reference.

Noodlenoggin. One of these days, I’ll lock myself out permanently, watch me.

i was filling out a form with a pink felt-tip pen, when they leaned over to push up th section where i needed to sign in black ballpoint

we were up to having a 13-million soldier army, with 3 million in iraq alone. we were achiving this only by conscripts being taken from th countries we’d occupied, but our only fear was not of th loyalty of those foreign troops, but rather only whether we were giving their unique cultural needs adequate consideration
