“Plain” Doesn’t Necessarily Mean “Correct”

Want a “plain language” explanation of how my head sees the world of pensions and other postretirement employee benefits? Try Actuarially Speaking: A Plain Language Summary of Actuarial Methods and Practices for Public Employee Pension and Other Post-Employment Benefits, published by the California Research Bureau.

But have an entire shakerful of salt on hand if you do. You really can’t expect all that much from a report that starts out promising “a basic understanding of actuarial accounting [sic] practices.”
