heavy rain on 59 and near town, then bright sun approaching th 610 loop on 45 south, then heavy rain again through to about Beltway 8

some resulting bad traffic, but still not adding all that much to th commute

good traffic – are some cars staying off th roads today because of yesterday’s mess combined with th weekend coming?

erin blew through to th south yesterday morning, its dirty side dumping a fair amount of rain in a very short time through late morning and early afternoon. Remembering allison, i opted to work from th house. good decision, looks like – from the tv images, my usual 35-40m afternoon commute might have turned into 3-4 hours or more of frustration

still learning th ropes of my new schedule, such as finding out that th gas station at beamer and hughes is not open at 5:30am, so i had to gas up at the stop & go near beamer and beltway 8. having forgotten i would need to do that (combined with sleeping a little later and posting a biz e-mail before leaving the house) put me about 10 minutes behind

thunder while gassing up. sproradically heavy rain during the final 1-2 miles of th commute. rest of th drive was dry

listened to npr, including some thoughtful discussion of problems of rebuilding th iraqi economy and an intriguing brief synopsis of th linkages between past japanese investment in the u.s. economy on borrowed japanese funds and th overnight 5% sell-off in th japanese equity markets

nemesis

leave a comment »

dogged pursuit made me th nemesis of a man (named in th dream, but unfamiliar) perputating major fraud

his product was not in and of itself inoperable, although it was below standard quality and failed to fulfill all th claims he made of it. heading to a meeting to present my case against him, i passed through th stairwell’s ground lobby for an institution that had bought his whole package and had been used by him as to give a good referral letter. a few words from me, and they were ready to lynch him

alone with my direct superior high in a leaveless tree, i pointed out that i was not the one deserving credit for tracking down this fiend, that it was th alert observations of one of th lower level staff that had led to th unravelling of th fabric of our organization and others. th supervisor thanked me and said that person would reap commensurate rewards, but that i ought not downplay my own role so much, that my attentive and steady work on th case had brought it to a successful conclusion for us. th supervisor’s branch broke, and he fell far down to th ground, but somersaulted up and called out that he was ok but watch all th branches for similar weakness, which was when my own branch began breaking off

our staff person’s curiosity had been aroused by uninvited proposals received from th fraud’s company that seemed to impose an exponentially rising financial obligation on any recipient unless immediately returned to th sender. worse, instructions indicated that th packages were to be forwarded unopened to a different department than they were originally mailed, so th recipient company was charged for th initial receipt as well as on the secondary receipt, then frequently beyond then

back in assembly room, with people milling around waiting to heard what i had to say, th fraud appears on th scene with more property to sell. he was very agitated at me for th cold reception he was getting from the others. he tried to reach me to argue with me and intimidate me, but was blocked from doing so by others in th group. i was not flustered at all

i overheard him later speaking to a young girl whom he essentially had kidnapped some years before and made his captivd. he was wanting her to check into my company’s public records to get more info on me that might be used in his war with me, then he came up with a further idea: “find out anything on anyone and everyone at his company,” he told her, planning to use pressure against them to extort me to relax my campaign. although i didn’t want my colleagues to come under his fire, I continued to press on with my campaign against him

through my unflappable persistence against him, his young assistant found courage to stand up for herself. when th three of us were together in a small room, she made a small sexual pass at me, both to give him th finger and to communicate to me her appreciation and affection

Erin – Wet Warmup

leave a comment »

Tropical storm Erin hit somewhere between Houston and Corpus Cristi about 8am this morning, and by 10am the dirty side hit the south side of Houston. Remembering the mess Allison made of my commute 6 years ago, I opted for working from the house today. Susan and I headed out in the early afternoon as the storm moved to the north side of town. We drove around checking out various routes into our vicinity – deep water to the south, east, and north, but the new road carved out during the past few years gave us an out to the west. All things considered, what we saw was very mild compared to Allison, although I was glad I’d not gone to the office: what would normally be a 40-minute afternoon commute would have taken me upwards of 5 hours today, given how badly certain parts of Houston were hit.

As always, larger versions of each pic available via clicking the thumbnail images –

PoolPool in Erin’s Dirty Side (10:49am) – During this hour, over 4 inches fell at Ellington, just a few miles down the road. Before the rain stopped, water in our pool was up over the edge of the coping.
Beamer South from ScarsdaleBeamer South from Scarsdale (12:54pm) – Looking toward the hospital. Water in this drainage ditch is usually just a small stream down near the bottom (as is the case on the Google satellite map).
Beamer North of ScarsdaleBeamer North of Scarsdale (1:01pm)
Beamer at HughesBeamer at Hughes (1:02pm) – After Allison first hit, I had to walk over 5 miles to the house from the Fuqua bus park & ride. Then, only the tops of the guardrails were visible where Hughes crossed the ditch, and I had to wade across in water up to my chest.
Beamer at HallBeamer at Hall (1:04pm)
Sagemeadow from HallSagemeadow from Hall (1:06pm) – Sagemeadow dips down from Hall, making this street quite flood-prone.
Nat & Susan Head to Bitty BurbNatalie & Susan Head to Bitty Burb (2:14pm) – Remnants of Erin’s dirty side still to the northeast.

Next up – Hurricane Dean, which could strike us at cat 2 a week from now.

longer faster

starting with this second week at the new job, i’ve started taking the longer route for the commute, up almost into town. i’ve not done the mileage yet either route, but this has to be maybe as much as 40-50% longer than the original route i took the first week, i would think. but since i’m avoiding bottlenecks, neighborhood speed limits, and numerous traffic lights, it is taking me as much as 40-50% less time. i’ll gauge both ways better sometime soon, once i get the routine down better
